IN THIS GUIDE · Sequence a Shannon systems analyst's TN application so the port of entry sees a finished file
Start with the TN eligibility and application overview
Settle the profession and the credential before the employer writes anything
Hypothetical example: a Shannon computer systems analyst employed by a bilingual IT services firm accepts a direct offer from a Colorado software company. Computer Systems Analyst is a listed profession that accepts a baccalaureate or a post-secondary diploma plus three years of experience. Her DEC in computer science and eight years of work fit the second limb. The employer should draft its letter only after that fit is confirmed, because a letter that calls her a software engineer or a developer would describe an unlisted job.
Confirm the U.S. employer is the actual employer
TN requires an identified U.S. employer or entity. If the Shannon analyst's current firm plans to second her to its U.S. client while keeping her on Québec payroll, that is a different structure and may not be TN at all; it may be an L-1 question, or it may be unlawful. The support letter must come from the party that will direct the work and pay for it, and any staffing intermediary must be named.
Assemble the file in the order the officer reads it
Passport first, to establish Canadian citizenship. Then the employer's letter stating the profession, duties, duration, salary and credential relied on. Then the credential: diploma, transcript and, for the experience limb, letters from previous employers giving dates and duties. Certified translations for French documents. A copy of the offer and a résumé at the back. If the analyst holds shares in the Colorado company, a written note on the stake and a counsel's view on self-employment.
Choose the venue by risk, not habit
A port-of-entry application gives a same-day answer; a Form I-129 petition gives a written approval before travel and suits a file with a prior refusal, an experience-based credential or an ownership stake. Both lead to the same status, granted for up to three years. Work may not begin before admission in TN status, and remote work for the Colorado employer from Shannon in the meantime should be raised with counsel rather than assumed.
