U.S. visa support for Canadians
ready for what’s next.
Hypothetical example: a Shannon avionics technician employed by a civilian aircraft-maintenance contractor is told the company needs him at a customer facility in Arizona for two years. His wife serves in the military and her own posting is decided by her employer, not by any U.S. rule, so this review covers only the civilian half of the household. His question is not which visa sounds right; it is whether the contractor is actually his employer at the U.S. site, whether his trade fits any professional list, and whether the assignment is a transfer inside a corporate group or a placement at somebody else's plant. Three different answers lead to three different routes.
In practice the routes a Shannon resident hears about are TN, for Canadian citizens in a profession listed under the USMCA with a prearranged U.S. employer; L-1A and L-1B, for managers and specialized-knowledge staff moved within one corporate family; E-2, for a Canadian citizen who commits real capital to a U.S. business and runs it; EB-5, for a job-creating immigrant investment; and the Gold Card, which the official program page presents as a gift plus a processing fee rather than a visa in the ordinary sense. What separates them is not effort or price. It is who employs or owns, what the person will actually do, and whether the goal is a temporary assignment or permanent residence.
Choose what brings you here. Leave with a short list of things to discuss—not another long form to fill out.
Contract chains hide the answer; the offer letter alone rarely gives it.

Ask for the contract that creates the U.S. work, not a summary of it. A subcontract between the Shannon employer and a U.S. prime, a letter of intent, a corporate chart, a share subscription: each says who controls what, and the immigration analysis follows control. Then add the personal records: passport, trade or degree certificates, the employment history that proves a year with the group. The reviewer's job is to line the two piles up and find the gap.

No promises we can’t keep.
A Shannon employee sent to a U.S. customer site can be a transferee, a contractor's placement or, in the wrong structure, an unauthorized worker. The contract chain answers this before any category does.
TN and E-2 need Canadian citizenship and TN needs a listed profession with its own credential rule. Bilingual households often hold mixed nationalities; write each one down.
A spouse's own career, a child's age and a partner's remote work each need a written answer. In this community that often includes a spouse whose employer, not immigration law, sets where she lives.
A consultation costs little; a resignation, a lease or a wire cannot be undone. Put the irreversible steps after the decision that justifies them, and diarize the status expiry from day one.
A remote review begins with facts, not categories: the contract or offer as received, a paragraph on each person who would move, and the date driving the question. Those documents can be reviewed in English or French to identify what is proven, what still needs a record, and which route the evidence supports.
Find your pathwayA remote review can use a short account of the Shannon-based situation: the employer or business, the U.S. counterpart, the people involved and their nationalities, the existing documents, and the questions to resolve. Its scope should identify where immigration analysis ends and business, tax, licensing, export-control, or clearance questions require the appropriate separate adviser.
Let’s connectArrange a remote consultation to discuss your next steps.
Not without status that authorizes it. Being paid in Canada does not change where the work happens. Whether you can go as an L-1 transferee, a TN professional or not at all depends on the corporate relationship, the control over your work and your citizenship, all of which should be checked against the actual subcontract.
Yes. TN and E-2 are tied to Canadian citizenship, so the British partner cannot be the principal on those routes. Other nationalities can open other doors, and L-1 and EB-5 do not depend on Canadian citizenship at all. Record every passport before comparing routes.
Usually, unless the specific USMCA profession accepts a diploma-plus-experience combination or a licence. A few technical categories do. Check the exact profession's rule, and if it does not fit, look at whether the assignment is really an intra-company transfer.
A review can only cover the civilian side. It will record that her location and status are governed elsewhere, plan the rest of the household around the facts you can control, and flag any date that depends on hers.
