U.S. visa support for Canadians
ready for what’s next.
Hypothetical example: an accountant at a small firm in L'Ancienne-Lorette is asked by a U.S. client to work on site as its controller for a year, and her partner, who runs a heating-and-ventilation contracting business, is being courted by a U.S. franchisor for a territory. The accountant's question is about her own credential and who would employ her; the contractor's question is about money, ownership and who would run the territory. Neither answer helps the other, and a household that plans them as one move usually plans both badly.
Each route on this site tests something different. TN tests a Canadian citizen's listed profession and a prearranged U.S. professional job. L-1A and L-1B test a year of employment inside a corporate group and the nature of the U.S. role. E-2 tests a treaty national's own capital at risk in an enterprise that person directs. EB-5 tests qualifying capital, ten jobs and a lawful funding history. The Gold Card is a gift-based framework with its own official terms. An L'Ancienne-Lorette household may combine a salaried proposal with a small-business proposal; each adult's route and work permission must be assessed separately.
Choose what brings you here. Leave with a short list of things to discuss—not another long form to fill out.
A client's request is not yet a TN job until a U.S. entity has arranged it.

Collect the deciding documents before naming a route. For the accountant: her CPA designation or degree, the client's written description of the controller duties, and whether the client or her Québec firm would employ her. For the contractor: the franchise disclosure document, the territory's cost, the source of the money, and the clause that says who hires and fires. A reviewer working from those pages can say what is missing; a reviewer working from two job titles can only guess.

A practical plan.
No promises we can’t keep.
One page for the controller engagement, one for the franchise territory. Name the U.S. entity, the money involved and the person who would do the work on each page, and do not let a fact from one page migrate to the other.
CPA certificate, engagement letter, franchise agreement, bank statements. Where the record does not exist yet, write who is expected to produce it and by when, and treat the fact as unproven until it arrives.
Test the controller engagement against TN's Accountant entry and the self-employment bar; test the territory against E-2's ownership, commitment and control rules. Add the household's dependants as separate lines with their own permissions.
The franchise agreement, the client engagement letter, the lease and the school enrolment each make something irreversible. Put them in order of consequence and let the eligibility review come before the first one.
There is no need to arrive with a category chosen. Send the client's engagement proposal, the franchise disclosure document and a plain statement of what the household wants in eighteen months. The review will separate the professional question from the investment question and identify which fact is missing on each side.
Find your pathwayConsultations for L'Ancienne-Lorette residents are remote. Describe each proposal briefly, list the questions you want answered, and ask what a review covers before sending a full file. Immigration eligibility, the commercial value of a franchise territory and the tax position of a professional working abroad are three specialties, and it is ordinary to need more than one adviser.
Let’s connectArrange a remote consultation to discuss your next steps.
No. One is an employment question about a Canadian citizen's profession; the other is an investment question about capital and control. Each is reviewed separately, and the two results are then placed on one household calendar.
Yes. TN requires that a U.S. entity has prearranged the professional work and does not permit self-employment, so who engages her, who pays her and whether her Québec firm remains the employer must be settled and documented.
Only if they are legally married and she obtains E-2 derivative status as his spouse; an unmarried partner is not eligible for E-2 derivative status. An E-2 spouse is employment-authorized incident to status and may work for any employer. If instead she is the TN principal and they are legally married, the contractor as a TD spouse may not work at all, so which route is principal changes the other's permissions.
Not before eligibility, documents and process are confirmed for each person. Ask the client and the franchisor in writing what happens if the date moves, and keep housing and schooling reversible until then.
