THE SHORT ANSWER

Hypothetical example: a quality-assurance manager at a pharmaceutical distributor in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures receives a U.S. offer, his wife is a registered nurse who wants to keep practising, and their daughter is nineteen and midway through college. If he travels on TN, his wife as a TD dependant could not work, but Registered Nurse is itself an Appendix 2 profession with a licence rule, so she may qualify for TN in her own right. The daughter can study in TD, but her twenty-first birthday sets a hard deadline for that status.

01

Give the nurse her own file

TD is the wrong status for a spouse who intends to work. The Appendix 2 entry for Registered Nurse requires a state or provincial licence or a Licenciatura degree, and U.S. practice will additionally require licensure in the state where she would work, which is a separate professional step with its own timeline and examinations. Her TN also needs a prearranged offer from a U.S. employer describing nursing duties. That means two support letters and two admission applications, and the household should decide whether she follows once her state licence issues. Until her own status exists, she may accompany him in TD and may not work, including remote work for her Québec employer from a U.S. address.

02

Put the daughter's birthday on the calendar first

A child in TD status may study, so the daughter may enrol in a U.S. college while under 21. On her twenty-first birthday she ceases to be eligible as a TD dependant and needs an independent basis to remain, most obviously a student status for which the college would issue the relevant document and for which she would apply in time. That transition has its own lead time and cost, and a family that discovers it during her junior year has left it late. Alternatively she may finish her studies in Québec and visit; visitors may not enrol in a full course of study. Write down the date, the college's international-student office contact and the application window before anyone books a mover.

03

Decide what moves together and what waits

The manager's TN, the nurse's state licence and TN, and the daughter's status change do not share a timeline, and forcing them to will damage one of them. A workable plan often has the manager begin on the offer date, the nurse follow when her licence and offer are in hand, and the daughter either complete her Québec year or arrange the student transition before her birthday. Each person's Canadian status matters too: a permanent-resident spouse rather than a citizen cannot use TN at all and would need a different route. Keep the household's list honest about what each person is permitted to do on each date, and treat the employer's start date as the first fixed point, not the only one.
