SAINTE-CATHERINE-DE-LA-JACQUES-CARTIER · FAMILY DECISIONS

Build a household plan around each person's actual intended activity

USAvisa field guide · 3 minute read Reviewed 7 September 2026
THE SHORT ANSWER

A shared move can involve genuinely different employment, study and arrival plans for each household member. Record each person's citizenship, relationship, age and intended activity before assuming that one person's status provides every permission the household needs; the principal applicant's opportunity is the starting point, not a complete answer for everyone. The family decision should start with each person’s proposed activity, not with an assumption that one principal’s approval resolves the household. Hypothetical example: a TN professional’s spouse intends to teach online music lessons from a U.S. apartment while their nineteen-year-old plans to study. The spouse’s work requires its own authorization analysis, and the child’s age and study plan need separate documentation. Write the plan person by person before choosing housing, schools, or a shared travel date.

01

Describe remote work as work, not as a side detail

Hypothetical example: one partner in a Québec City household has a U.S. offer, while the other plans to keep working remotely for a Québec employer from inside the United States. Put that activity into the review explicitly. TD status does not authorize employment, and qualifying E or L spouses are employment-authorized incident to status, with individual documentation still relevant; the employer's location alone does not decide the answer. State the physical location where work will be done, the employer or customers, and the expected dates. Remote work is still work for immigration purposes; a foreign payroll address does not answer the authorization question.

02

Separate study plans from employment and age-related limits

Record a child's school or university plan together with their age and current status dates. Study can be permitted in TD or E/L dependent status while that status is maintained, but it does not extend the authorized stay or grant employment permission on its own. Identify any internship or paid activity separately, and do not apply a spouse's employment rule to a dependent child by default. List each child’s age, school plan, and the exact status on which the plan depends. Study permission, age limits, and work authorization are separate matters that should be checked before tuition or enrolment commitments are made.

03

Identify the consequence of a changed date for the household

Ask what happens if one family member cannot begin the intended activity, or cannot arrive, on the preferred date. Keep school, housing and employment conditions available for practical review rather than fixed. For permanent-residence plans, have visa availability and child-age questions individually assessed, and do not assume a payment or a filed petition freezes anyone's eligibility; the goal is a plan built on actual permissions and clearly flagged open decisions. Recheck the whole household when a job date, marital status, child’s age, or principal’s category changes. The first approval does not preserve a later plan that rests on different facts.
